February 11–Use Your Scapel

Happy Sunday! Are you iced in? We certainly are. There is a thick coat of ice here on everything. It is slick! Cars are crashing, people are falling, it’s a mess! I’m doing my best to stay safe and not fall. I’ve done well to avoid surgery on my shoulder for a year now and I don’t want to go and mess that all up because I fall on the ice.  I don’t like to be cut on. When the scalpel cuts on you, it hurts. And it cuts straight through skin, muscle, nerves, vessels, and whatever else gets in its way. It makes a clean cut, but a cut none the less. And cuts are painful. And they take time to heal.  Sometimes when I’m reading God’s Word, I hit something that hits me right where I live and have weaknesses. It cuts me. It hurts. And I realize once again that I need help to live a life worthy of His calling, “God means what he says. What he says goes. February 21-His Peace

Happy Thursday. I’ve been inundated lately about having the love of Jesus and showing it to those around us. Last night in my class we talked a lot about what it means to love your enemies. What does it look like to be Jesus to those who treat you really badly? In the podcast I listened to while I was walking yesterday, I heard about showing the love of Jesus to a lost a dying world—being the right Jesus in a wrong world. And then, as I watched the second part of the John outline, (you guessed it) begins about love and how the followers of Jesus would be able to show a ridiculous love to those around them because of the Spirit that would abide within them.  As I read the second part of the book of John, the thing that stuck with me was Jesus telling His disciples not to worry, that He was going to leave them with peace, His peace. July 5–Lit Sky over Bethlehem 

It’s Friday and I hope you had a good holiday where ever you may have celebrated it. Last night, the sky was just lit up for a few hours—everywhere you looked there were amazing light shows. There was a place a half a world away and 2,000 years ago where the night sky lit up—supernaturally—with a hops of angels over a little field outside of Bethlehem.  When we visited Bethlehem, I was stuck by how much it resembled any town in the US where there is a long history of tourism. We passed the “Manger Square Hotel”, “Shepherds Grocery”, “Holy land Hotel”, “Tree of Life” gifts, the “Shalom Hotel” and my favorite, “Stars and Bucks”. There are actually two churches that have built cathedrals over the place where It’s thought Jesus was actually born. But in the fields, where shepherds were keeping watch over their sheep, it relatively untouched.  When we think of shepherds, we have idolized them, I think.
