November 15–Jesus, a Better Priest

Happy Friday. Yesterday at the mall, the construction of Santa’s house began. It’s amazing to think the holidays are upon us. Even though we know that our lives are transformed by the word of God and the working of the Holy Spirit, the Christmas celebration plays a big role in how we view our faith. In much the same way, the temple sacrifices with the priests were major events for the Hebrews.

“Jesus became a priest, not by meeting the physical requirement of belonging to the tribe of Levi, but by the power of a life that cannot be destroyed...Because of this oath, Jesus is the one who guarantees this better covenant with God...The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7:16, 22, 28‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Anyone raised on the Old Testament would feel the importance of the priest, whose role was instituted in the Law. Not just anyone could be a priest—they must be a descendant of Aaron and Levi and offer sacrifices to God exactly as prescribed.

The writer of Hebrews tells us two things about how Jesus’ priesthood is superior to Aaron’s. The first is that He is a priest of the order of Melchizedek who was before Aaron and He is a priest who is a king of righteousness without beginning or end. Second, His appointment is not by genealogy but was given to Him by an oath from God and it is impossible for God to lie.

Not just the Old Testament Hebrews, but us as well are in need of of priest to intercede for us. We are simply not worthy to approach the most holy God but hallelujah what a wonderful priest we have in Jesus. Unlike other priests, Jesus lives forever and needs no successor. His sacrifice of himself once and for all need never be repeated. Jesus is able to save us and understand us in every situation, because He lived and always lives to intercede for us.

Jesús, Savior, thank you for ever interceding for us. You are such an amazing God who cares so much for us. Your love continues to astound us and we are so grateful. Help us to show that love to those around us and to draw others to you. We want to make your name famous. Today, we bring those who are fighting sickness and disease and who are in surgery before you. Touch them Lord with your hand of mercy. Surround them and the friends and family who are caring for them. Forgive us where we have failed you Lord and help us to walk in lock-step with you. All praise to the Lamb of God, we worship you El Elyon. Amen and amen.

Love you dear one,

Pam.
