November 14-Come To God

Happy Thursday. Yesterday, one of my best friends had a wreck and totaled her car. She also hit her head and ended up with a goose-egg on her forehead, an awful black eye and a terrible sore neck. We are so very thankful because it could have been much worse. We know that God stepped in and protected her.

That’s exactly how God tends to work. In His perfect timing. Her car may be shot, and she may have a bump on her head, but she is safe. God always provides the means for us to come to Him in our time of need. Since we are not steeped in the Torah as Hebrews, we may be all confused when we get to the chapter 7 of Hebrews and read about Melchizedek. But He is the priest sent by God to Abraham who was the foreshadow of Jesus.

“And the psalmist pointed this out when he prophesied, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” Yes, the old requirement about the priesthood was set aside because it was weak and useless. For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God...But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever...He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven...Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins.”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7:17-19, 24, 26-27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We are taken back 2,000 years before Jesus and told of how Abraham meets this ‘king of righteousness’ who was also a priest of God Most High. He stood apart from Abraham and all the other kings who were on one side or the other in war. He blessed Abraham and received from him a ritually significant offering. Melchizedek nor his people are ever mentioned again.

In Abraham’s day there were no other priests of God. Israel’s descendants who were to be priests were not yet born. Yet God planned this encounter to show that even the great Abraham needed a priestly mediator. Here is a priest unlike the sons of Levi, one mysteriously sent by God. There is a reference to him in Psalm 110, referring to the Messiah as a priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Isn’t it great that God always provides the means we need to go to him? Our minds cannot grasp the majesty of the immortal and invisible God, nor can we approach him acceptably. Obviously, we need a mediator and no one fits the role better than Jesus to be our priest. Are we blessed, or what?

God of Heaven, thank you so very much for providing the means for us to come to you. We praise you today for protection and care when we are unaware. How blessed we are for your surrounding. Jesus we pray for forgiveness today where we have failed you, where we have fallen short of the mark you have set for us. Help us to stand back up, dust us off and show us the direction we should head. We love you Lord and it’s our desire to serve you and to draw others to you. We want to run the race and finish the course so the crown will be waiting for us, but most of all, we long to see your face. Praise you great Jehovah Jirah. Amen and amen.

Love you dear one,

Pam
