November 13–we Know For Sure
Starting here in the second half of chapter six, the writer of Hebrews begins his theme of the next four chapters. As he told us, the Son is superior and he spelled out how essential it is we receive and pursue our faith. But how can we be really sure we are right?
“Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.”
Hebrews 6:17-18 NIV
Clearly, there are ‘two unchangeable things’...‘in which it is impossible for God to lie’. They are: the oath (promise) and the blood of sacrifice (seal).
This passage is the beginning of the argument and we do not see yet how Jesus fits into this, but we are assured of the certainty of God’s promises. He made a promise to Abraham and it was fulfilled. Remember, this book was written to Jewish believers, so the idea of Father Abraham and the Seed of Abraham was a truth grounded deep in their souls. Even before the Law came through Moses, the Hebrews’ roots were in the promise of Abraham, and of this, they were very sure.
When we study the Scriptures, we too will be fully convinced that the God who made the Covenant with Abraham is, and always will be, trustworthy and faithful. It is the very nature of the God, who has revealed Himself and spoken by an oath, that we can be and are sure.isnt that exciting?
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
Hebrews 6:19-20 NIV
Spirit of the Living God, we pray for your guiding. Teach us what it means Lord to pray as you lead us—to pray through you and in step with you. Help us to be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. When we face skeptics and doubters who make us question our faith, remind us of the unchangeable God who cannot lie. Give us the words to speak when we are asked give to give the reason for this amazing hope we have. We pray for those who are facing illness and disease today. Touch them with your healing hand of mercy. And for the families who are with those nearing the end, be in the room Spirit and let them feel the warmth of your presence that brings the comfort only you can—the peace beyond all understanding. We love you and worship you on this day you have made. Thank you for your great grace and your loving mercy. Amen and amen.
Love you dear one,
Pam
