October 14

It’s Monday!

Did you have a good weekend? I worked both days, but it was good. OU beat Texas (I have no idea why that’s such a big deal!) and we started a new series on the Holy Spirit at church. I am very excited to study the person and attributes of the Spirit of God. One thing we know the Spirit does is to help us to love.

When we were in Kudasai, Turkey, we visited a rug factory. An amazing place. Tiny silk worms spin their silk cocoons from silk threads. Those threads are spun out, dyed and turned into beautiful masterpiece rugs. I was in awe (even more so at the price!). But as I watched the “unspinning” of the silk, I kept thinking how wonderfully those silk worms had been made by the Creator. Obviously, nothing made by man can compare with what these little invertebrates can spit out. The wonders of God’s handiwork in this world can just blow me away!

The next thought, however, is how people take that silk, turn it into thread and then, turn it Into a piece of outstanding artistry.

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭8:3-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“This is the written account of Adam’s family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.”

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Amazing as all creation is, we are the most amazing creation. Because unlike silk worms or elephants or dogs or coconut trees, we have been made in God’s image with a soul to be like Him.

In Greece, seeing all the temples to the gods who all looked like people made me realize that making a god like Zeus or Diana was man’s innate understanding that we have been made in the image of God—they were just unaware of the one true God. But they did have that deep seeded knowledge that there was some greater power who gave life and who made us different that the rest of the animals.

What it does for me is cause me to look at those around me in a little different light. They have been made for a purpose and in the image of God. We are told in Genesis (9:6) not to shed human blood because humans were made in the image of God. If we are all uniquely made to be like Him, are we not all worthy of love, respect, honor and protection? (And just yesterday, I wasn’t very happy with a fellow driver—I obviously wasn’t thinking of how he was uniquely made.) one simple thing we have to work on most every day—Love one another.

Lord of Heaven, thank you for making me in your image. Help me to remember every person I encounter was also created in your image and worthy of my love and honor. Help us God to understand this basic truth and to let it overflow into our lives. What a great God you are who models this love in a over the top way—your love amazes us. We pray the cross stays before us and we place our hope on things above. Let us truly experience you. Surround us today and open our eyes to the miracles around us. Amen and amen.

Love you dear friend,

Pam
