May 21–Rain rain rain

Happy Tuesday to you. Here in Webb City, it has rained really hard and more is coming today. Things (including my yard) are flooded and soaked. There are flood warnings and several creeks and rivers are above flood stage already. We are ready for a little less moisture and a lot more sun.

As the rain slaps across the sides of my house and the lightening streaks across the sky, I’m very glad my house is built on a concrete slab attached by huge bolts. It was built wisely. I have seen some pictures of houses that were not built wisely and they slid down a hill or just collapsed during rainstorms.

““Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:24-29‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We are each building a life. Jesus wasn’t concerned with construction or building codes. He used this example because foundations are vital—in life, business, finances, relationships. The proper foundation for a life is Jesus’ words—not just the hearing of them, but the doing of them, too (James 1:22). Shifting ideas or loyalties just makes for a collapse of our lives, but should we remain committed and fast to our strong and mighty rock, we can stand strong through the storms life throws at us.

It seems at times that everything in the world is set up to make us turn away from God’s words. And often, our own feelings pull us toward doing the exact opposite of what the Bible says. But a wise man will follow the words of God despite these pressures—not as a way to “show off” or earn salvation, but because he trusts God. All through the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presented Himself as the final authority on and fulfiller of the Law; He ends the sermon with a call to heed His message and, in fact, find one’s security in Him.

As we follow the Lord, learning to trust and obey Him, we receive a reward: our “house” is steady and solid, unshaken by circumstances.

Lord thank you for building our lives on the solid rock where we can be steady and unshaken. You are such a great God and your mercy and grace overwhelms us. We trust in your Name, not in our good works. Your love will never fail us and we sing praise to the Lord our God. We ask for your blessings this day and that you would surround us. We pray for friends and family who don’t know you and we plead for their hearts to be softened. We love you Lord. All power and glory be to you. Amen and amen.

Love you dear friend,

Pam
