March 2–Our Teacher

It’s the weekend and I hope you are able to have a great time in fellowship and corporate worship at church. Yesterday I was talking to a friend about something and I said “Well, they say...” and the response was “Who says?” And of course I had no idea. But it made me start thinking about where we get our thoughts and ideas. Most of what we think is a collection of what we have heard from teachers, parents, grandparents, friends, TV or things we’ve read. We have been taught in some way or another. We sift through and sort though and decide what we want to keep and that becomes our body of knowledge. Most of us have very little that could be considered original thought.

Jesus is referred to as a teacher in 18 different verses. Many of them, are with the Pharisees and Sadducees, and Herodians, so they probably were using “teacher” as a sarcastic title rather than one of respect, but even those people understood Jesus was a teacher. And today, those who don’t believe Jesus was the sin of God will say they believe he was a great teacher. So obviously, He was a teacher of some renowned and our Savior and Lord in top of that, so shouldn’t we want Him to be our teacher? Our teachers are the people who fill our minds with thoughts, so it only makes sense that we want our primary instructor to be Jesus.

“Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭2:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.”

‭‭John‬ ‭7:14‬ ‭NIV

“Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:1-2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

What would that have been like to literally sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to Him teach? Would we have been better than the Pharisees do you think? Or would we like them hang on to our rituals and rules and try to find fault with his rational ideas? Most of us don’t like change and those religious rulers really didn’t like change! But they really did think they were protecting the God’s holy law. When I read the words of Jesus and try to let them settle in my heart and mind, it does change how I think. It changes how I act and how I approach the day. When I let Him teach me, I am changed and change can be a little scary. But Jesus as your teacher...it’s always a good thing.

Jesus Lord of Heaven, teach us with your wisdom and your unique way to know exactly what we need when we need it. We pray that you would change us through your words and make us to be like you. We want to learn from you our King and grow in grace to have a heart that reflects your great love. We want the world to see you when they look at us. We praise you Jehovah. Open our ears to hear you and our eyes to see you. Amen and amen.

Love you dear one,

Pam
