September 17–Silver Spoons

Happy Monday. I hope you had a good weekend and were able to worship the Lord with other believers yesterday. I have a new passion (or maybe it’s an obsession, I’m not sure which). Pineapple Bliss. It’s a concoction of pineapple, pineapple juice and water blended together, frozen and pushed out like soft serve. It’s amazing! And since I can’t eat dairy, it’s double amazing for me!! So anytime I have an excuse, I run to 22nd and Main and grab one. Yesterday, MIA came by and that was my excuse! So while we were blissing out, I couldn’t help but notice the cheap plastic spoon that she kept clicking on her teeth. Now, it wasn’t “clay” or “wood” like the Bible speaks of, but I decided it’s our version of the cheap spoon. And I kept thinking how much nicer it is when you don’t have to eat with plastic—when you are eating with a nice, weighted, silver spoon. I have some spoons that are thin, but I have some that are heavy. Nicer. I always go to those first.

“In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.”

‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:20-22‬ ‭NLT‬‬

So if we want to be a special spoon—one that doesn’t just get thrown away at the car wash, but gets washed and used again and again—we need to keep our lives clean. Right? It sure seems pretty clear. In fact, the apostle says “Run!” And to be a spoon that is ready for the Master for every good work that he has for you. Are you up to the challenge? In some ways it sounds a bit daunting, doesn’t it? My friends Adam and Courtney had 17-3rd grade boys yesterday morning in their Sunday School class. THAT, my friend is being silver spoons! And not just a silver, but a spoon with some weight behind it!

And Paul admonishes us to hang out with those who enjoy the Lord. Being with fellow believers, talking about our faith and our Jesus strengthens us and helps us. Sharing our struggles and our issues, and praying for each other not only brings us closer together as Christian friends, but helps us to understand and solidifies our relationship with Jesus. It polished the silver and keeps it ready to be used on a moments notice.

Dear Father, thank you for these words of Paul to Timothy that teach all of us more than 2,000 years later how we should live and what we should pursue. You are such an amazing God to know exactly what we would need to hear today when you inspired Paul’s words. Help us to always pursue right living, faithfulness, love and peace. You have provided the church as a means of a fellowship of believers where we can enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord. We are in awe of your presence living in us and we are desperate for you to be among us. Your amazing love astounds us and we pray to feel your presence this day. Surround us Lord. Praise you El Elyon, the God most high. Amen and amen.

Love you dear friend,

Pam
