Wednesday-What's a Name?

Happy Wednesday! Last night I was at a soccer game for two of my grandkids and as they were running down the field, I couldn't remember one of the kid's name who had the ball so all I could say was "kick it!" I kept thinking how ineffective that was to a field of kids running after a ball. Names are important. Names give us identity and along with our last names, a sense of belonging. 


God gives himself several different names in the Bible. Yahweh or the English version Jehovah, is used about 6,807 times in the Old and New Testaments. Each name that he adds to Yahweh is significant and identifies a facet of God's greatness. 


Maybe the one we say most often is Yahweh-Yireh, or the English version Jehovah-Jireh which means the LORD will provide.


Yireh is from the same Hebrew word as Moriah, which is the name of the region where God sent Abraham to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22). I never noticed before, but in vs 5 when Abraham tells the servant that they are going to worship and he should stay back, he says "we will return." Abraham had faith that God was going to provide long before he tied Isaac to that altar. Abraham had seen God's provision time and time again. In fact Isaac was living proof of God's provision to Abraham. He was well acquainted with the God who provides and when God came through again, it was nothing for Abraham to build an altar and offer praise to Jehovah-Jireh. Do you think that continual praise from Abraham could have something to do with why God and he were so close to one another? 


“Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided"...This is what the Lord says: "Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies.”

God provided the lamb. And Abraham called the place Yahweh-Yireh, then God swears by that very name that He will bless Abraham. What's in a name? Quite a lot it seems. 


Today, spend time thinking about what God has given to you and then, praise Him for it. Praise Jehovah-Jireh, the God who provides and the God who blesses by His very name.and what a name it is!

Happy Friday. It’s the end of another week and we have had more opportunities to share the love of Christ with those around us and sometimes that takes quite a bit of effort. Happy Wednesday to you. I hope your week is going well. Yesterday, I went to Sams. I was out of things like trash bags, toilet paper, and chicken, so off I went. I like going to Sams because there is always lots to look at and the isles are nice and wide. Everytime I’m there, I am amazed at how much stuff and everything from diapers to TVs to mangos to beds. It just seems incredible that so many things in such quantities are all under one roof.  King David never saw a store with as much stuff aa Sams of course, but he did see countless miracles and understand that God has plans. It’s Thursday and I woke up to the blowing wind! Lots of it—I’m dreading Boomer waking up and having to go outside with him. That harsh, bitter wind seems cruel and almost evil. But I’ll wrap myself up with a fe layers and boots and brave it all.  Sometimes I think we try to do that with things we know aren’t right—things that are evil.
